Downtown Eats: Italian Kitchen

Located on Alberni, Italian Kitchen is convenient for downtown folks, with metered parking and valet available as well. Although best known for their Spaghetti with Kobe Meatballs, Italian Kitchen offers a variety of other pastas too. Try a few with their Pasta Platter. On the platter are braised veal cannelloni with wild mushroom cream, pappardelle with lamb sausage, the Kobe meatballs but the spaghetti is served with truffle cream (not the usual spicy tomato basil sauce), and the rigatoni pomodoro. My absolute fave? The pappardelle because of the lamb sausage.

Think pasta is too heavy for lunch? Get a Kobe Meatball panini. Meatballs with roasted portabellini mushroom, provolone and a crispy onion ring. Served with a nice side green salad, hearty and healthy.

Or try their Tartufo Funghi Pizza Portobello baked right into the truffle-infused cheese, and topped with arugula. I loved the crust with the charred edges. If you like truffles, you need to try this.

When you have time for a slow lunch, try the Carne & Pesce Piatto; loaded with meat and fish and a bit of veggies and pasta. There are two pieces of veal Milanese, a nice serving of linguine carbonara, roasted trout, some crab-stuffed prawns wrapped in a pancetta blanket and their infamous fried brussel sprouts.

No meal is complete without dessert. I’m a devoted fan of sour desserts, and if you are like me, try the Lemon Hazelnut Mille Folglie, phyllo wafers laced with hazelnut and layered with a tart lemon cream, topped with lemon sorbet and pomegranate sauce.

Next week, I’ll take you to another one of my favourites in historic Chinatown, Phnom Penh
