Italian Day festival organizers ask City of Vancouver for support citing FIFA impacts

Festival organizers behind the massive Italian Day celebration in Vancouver are asking the City for some funding, and are citing FIFA World Cup impacts as one of the main reasons.

Vancouver Councillor Lisa Dominato submitted the motion, Supporting Italian Day on Commercial Drive in 2026.

Dominato’s motion calls Italian Day on Commercial Drive one of Vancouver’s largest and “well-attended” festivals.

If you’ve ever been to Italian Day in Vancouver, you’ll know that it attracts swaths of people from all backgrounds, with Dominato’s motion suggesting tens of thousands of residents and visitors.

Unfortunately for the Italian Day Festival Society, and partially due to the FIFA World Cup, this year has become a bit more competitive. The motion points out it’s particularly due to the competitive sponsorship and advertising environment this year, which limits the ability of community festivals tos ecure traditional corporate support and fundraising revenues.

While Italian Day is still going to happen this year, without the extra funding the society is asking for, it might not be the same quality event that attendees are used to.

“Italian Day organizers have indicated that these external pressures have materially affected their ability to raise sufficient funds to deliver the event at its usual scale and quality, including the loss of valuable street banner revenue during the FIFA period,” the motion reads.

The total shortfall is $60,000. So, the motion calls for a one-time extraordinary grant of up to $60,000 from the City’s 2026 operating budget, “or another funding source.”

“Vancouver is a very expensive city, and Italian Day remains a free, all-ages event that invites everyone to be Italian for the day through food, music, entertainment and family activities,” said Melissa De Genova, president of the Italian Day Festival Society, in a release.

“Italian Day is one of Vancouver’s most anticipated summer festivals, and we are encouraged to see Vancouver City Council considering this additional financial support while also supporting local businesses and celebrating culture and community,” De Genova added.

Earlier this year, Car Free Days in Vancouver was saved thanks to a one-time grant.

This year’s Italian Day takes place on June 14 from noon to 8 p.m.
