International Dance Day events in Vancouver

Dancers across Vancouver are joining the worldwide dance community this Friday in celebrating International Dance Day.

Since 1982, the day has commemorated the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, a distinguished choreographer who reformed ballet production.

In and around Vancouver, a whole host of activities are going on for International Dance Day. Here’s a full rundown:


  • What: An open rehearsal of Co.ERASGA, a contemporary dance company that aims to explore issues of cultural identity, gender, hybridity, and cross-cultural dialogue.
  • Where: Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, Burnaby
  • When: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Dovbush Dancers + Shot of Scotch

  • What: An exuberant performance of dances from Ukraine and the Scottish Highlands.
  • Where: Vancouver Public Library Main Concourse – 350 West Georgia Street, Vancouver
  • When: Noon to 12.30 p.m.

Open Rehearsal

  • What: Open rehearsal with Dance Centre Artist-in-Residence Justine A. Chambers and Jenn Goodwin.
  • Where: Scotiabank Dance Centre – 677 Davie Street, Vancouver
  • When: 12:30 p.m. – 2.30 p.m.

 Urban Youth Blast

  • What: Students from Windermere Secondary School perform a high-energy hip hop routine created with Kim Sato of Project Soul.
  • Where: 1 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.
  • WhenVancouver Art Gallery South Plaza – Robson Street, Vancouver

Arts Umbrella Dance Company

  • What: An open rehearsal with Lesley Telford at the not-for-profit arts education centre.
  • Where: Arts Umbrella Granville Island – 1286 Cartwright St, Vancouver
  • When: 1:30 p.m. – 3 p.m.


  • What: Ziyian Kwan of Dumb Instrument Dance gives an informal showing of studio research for her new interdisciplinary collaboration with sculptor Tanis Saxby, cellist Peggy Lee and media artist Cande Andrade Gutierrez.
  • Where: Scotiabank Dance Centre – 677 Davie Street, Vancouver
  • When: 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

The Things I Carry

  • What: Lee Su-Feh of Battery Opera performance explores the body as an archive of experiences, sensations and history, through story-telling, song, movement and electronic devices. This intimate work was developed through Migrant Bodies, an EU-supported project reflecting on migrations and their cultural impact.
  • Where: Scotiabank Dance Centre – 677 Davie Street, Vancouver
  • When: 5 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Space + Time

  • What: A program of dynamic contemporary dance by Amber Funk Barton, Artistic Director of The Response, including work-in-progress excerpts of her upcoming solo VAST and new work for the company’s Apprentice Program.
  • Where: Scotiabank Dance Centre – 677 Davie Street, Vancouver
  • When: 6 – 7 p.m.


  • What: Performance of Blueprint to a better place, by edgy and acclaimed contemporary dance company.
  • Where: Surrey Arts Centre – 13750 88 Avenue, Surrey
  • When: 7 p.m.

Sudnya Dance Company

  • What: Free community dance workshops and a ticketed performance of Colours – An International Dance Day Celebration
  • Where: Workshops at Aberdeen Centre – 4151 Hazelbridge Way, Richmond; show at Steveston-London Secondary School – 6600 Williams Rd, Richmond
  • When: Workshops on April 29 between 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.; show on April 30 at 2:30 p.m.
