Instagram blocks #EDM hashtag

Amongst the many searchable hashtags on Instagram, #EDM is no longer one.

The photo-sharing platform said it has banned #EDM from its tag searches. Instagram told Thump over email that the hashtag was blocked after being consistently used to share images and videos that violate its Community Guidelines.

“In this case, #EDM was being used to share content that violates our guidelines around nudity,” read the email.

The social media app is known to have a blacklist of unsearchable hashtags. For long, questions have been raised over why some content is banned while others continue to exist.

When selling and buying firearms through Instagram was discovered, the social media platform did not crack down on transactions, but instead added enforcement measures to “limit access to people over the age of 18 or older if required by applicable law.”

In July, Instagram also banned the hashtag #curvy, after it said the tag was being linked to pornographic content, but then lifted the ban after backlash. Instagram’s current method of dealing with guideline violations is to ban hashtags that are subject to inappropriate content. However, the company said it will be finding a way to restore banned tags faster.

In the meantime, the electronic dance music community — which itself is not responsible for the certain posts containing nudity — continues to celebrate its music culture through similar hashtags, such as #EDMnation and #EDMlife.
