BC Bids to Bring International Indian Film Academy Awards to Vancouver

Dec 19 2017, 1:13 pm

Yesterday Premier Christy Clark announced that B.C. has placed a bid to host the 14th annual International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA’s) in 2013. For those unfamiliar with Bollywood and Indian cinema in general, consider the awards to be the Oscars of the Indian film world. No doubt the premier saw the success and impact the awards show had in Toronto this year, the first time the awards were held in North America. Metro Vancouver (Surrey if they had the infrastructure and ability to put on such an event) with it’s nearly 300,000 South Asian’s would be a perfect location and Christy Clark is determined to make it happen.

If B.C. wins the bid it can expect to see 40-50,000 visitors and generate millions in revenue for local and provincial coffers. The event will require some funding, as 24 Hours Vancouver has reported the cost of hosting such an event is around $12 million. A small price to pay.

The three day event has an estimated viewing audience of 750 million.
