Massive icicles on condo balconies baffle Vancouver pedestrians

Jan 16 2024, 5:07 pm

It’s no secret that Vancouver doesn’t deal well with winter weather, and on Monday, a Yaletown condo building showed downtown residents a side effect of cold weather many had never seen before.

A series of icicles formed on the balconies of the Charleson building on Pacific Street, telling the frozen story of water that apparently dripped down at least five storeys.

These weren’t just any icicles, though — they were massive. In a photo submitted by a Daily Hive reader, the largest hangs down from the floor of the above balcony to the railing of the story below. That’s nearly as tall as a person.

When Daily Hive visited the scene, people walking by stopped to stare at the building before moving on. Thankfully, the icicles were removed before they fell and hurt someone.

The sidewalk in front of the Charleson was cordoned off Tuesday afternoon, and by 5 pm, the icicles had been knocked off. Their cracked remnants could be seen on the sidewalk, and some ice was still stuck to the balconies.

It’s unclear how the massive icicles formed, and Daily Hive has contacted the building’s property management company for more information.

Vancouver has been dealing with cold temperatures this week and is due for another hammering of snow, rain, and freezing rain on Tuesday evening as a system moves in off the Pacific.
