B.C. drivers could soon get online ICBC licence renewal

Major changes to how B.C. drivers can renew and replace their licence through ICBC are in the works through the Government of B.C.
The Ministry of Attorney General announced on Thursday, Feb. 19, that new legislation has been introduced to establish online renewal or replacement of a B.C. driver’s licence, BCID, and photo BC Service Cards.
According to the Ministry, the proposed amendments will save B.C. drivers time, as well as reduce lines for other in-person appointments.

“Too many people have to take time off work or travel long distances just to renew or replace their ID,” said Attorney General Niki Sharma in a release. “By allowing these straightforward transactions online, we’re making life more convenient for people, especially those in rural and remote communities.
“This is part of our work to modernize government services, so they’re easier, faster and more accessible for everyone in British Columbia.”
If the proposed amendments pass, eligible drivers can apply through ICBC‘s website and digital portal for select services, including replacing a valid driver’s licence that was destroyed, damaged, or lost.
Eligible drivers can also apply for simple renewals for most licence classes, when no changes are needed other than extending the expiry date.

However, any renewals that involve a change in a driver’s information, such as name or address, will require an in-person visit to a driver licensing office.
“Being able to renew your driver’s licence online is an important step forward in the ongoing modernization of ICBC’s services,” said Jason McDaniel, president and CEO of ICBC, in a statement.
“By expanding our digital options, we’re making it more convenient for customers to access the services they need, when and where it works best for them. This enhancement improves accessibility, particularly for those in rural or remote communities, and reflects our commitment to delivering a modern, customer-focused experience for everyone we serve.”
The Ministry of Attorney General added that drivers who prefer in-person appointments will still be able to attend them.
It also clarified that eligibility criteria for online renewals and replacements are still being developed, and that current conditions that come with renewing a driver’s licence will still be enforced.
