The churro ice cream sandwich is a food mash-up hit

Dec 19 2017, 11:37 pm

Churros and ice cream just go together. The churro ice cream sandwich is a delectable and easy-to-eat treat, and this latest food mash up has been brought to life here in Vancouver by Hugo’s Churros.

Dan Garcia of Hugo’s Churros gave us the scoop on this delicious cinnamon-sugar crusted morsel of creamy goodness, as well as the deets on where the people of Vancouver can pick one up this summer.

What was the inspiration behind this delicious food and flavour pairing?

Hugo’s Churros, an extension of Hugo’s Mexican Kitchen, came to life out of a love for Mexican food, and the idea to share fresh, delicious churros with Vancouver. Since we started Hugo’s Churros we knew right away we wanted to make a churro ice cream sandwich. What better flavour to start with than vanilla bean? The creaminess of the gelato and the crisp outside and dense inside of the churro make our ice cream sandwich the ultimate summer treat.

What makes your ice cream sandwich stand out from others available?

I think what makes our churro ice cream sandwich different is that they are made fresh on the spot. Each churro disk is pumped, fried, and sugared right in front of your eyes. We also proudly source our organic flour and gelato locally, and use only the best ingredients to create this gem.

Hugo’s Churros is responsible for the churro sandwich, are you also responsible for making the ice cream too?

We love being able to support other local businesses, so our premium gelato comes from Mario’s Gelati – a Vancouver based gelateria. They have been around for longer than my grandpa and truly have the best gelato out there!

Is vanilla bean the only flavour you offer?

The pairing of Mario’s vanilla bean gelato and our churros is perfect; however the possibilities are truly endless, and we are brainstorming and doing lots of tests as you can imagine. It’s a tough job.

Are there any new combinations you’ve been experimenting with lately?

Yes, lots! But of course those are top secret until they are finalized.

What led you to become a churro entrepreneur?

I grew up in Mexico and I am very passionate about Mexican food. I think that the Mexican cuisine spectrum is endless and has been explored very little. We have a small Mexican restaurant in Chilliwack, Hugo’s Mexican Kitchen, and people have always loved our churros, so we decided to take them mobile for the rest of Metro-Van to try.

Where can people find you?

We will be launching our summer location soon. Aside from that, customers can book our cart for private parties or events, we also like to pop-up at local markets and food-truck festivals.
