It was always a matter of when, not if, Quinn Hughes would set this record. And on Monday night, the Vancouver Canucks captain tied it.
Hughes picked up an assist on Jake DeBrusk’s overtime goal against the San Jose Sharks, which tied Alex Edler’s franchise record for points by a defenceman (409).

Remarkably, Hughes broke the record in less than half as many games as Edler. It took Edler 925 games to pile up 409 points, while Hughes did it in just 432 games.
The Canucks captain can break the record in Wednesday’s season finale at Rogers Arena against the Vegas Golden Knights.
Hughes now has 76 points in 67 games this season, which is the second-highest scoring season ever by a Canucks blueliner, second only to his Norris Trophy winning season (92 points) last year.
Canucks all-time points by defencemen:
- Quinn Hughes — 409
- Alex Edler — 409
- Mattias Ohlund — 325
- Jyrki Lumme — 321
- Dennis Kearns — 321
- Doug Lidster — 307
- Kevin Bieksa — 241
- Sami Salo — 236
- Ed Jovanovski — 234
- Rick Lanz — 227
