It can’t be easy having multiple kids playing in the NHL. Just ask the Hughes family.
The New Jersey Devils played their home opener against the Florida Panthers on Thursday night. During the contest, Jack Hughes scored his first goal of the season, beautifully placing the puck over the right shoulder of Panthers netminder Danill Tarosov.
Hughes’ goal brought everyone out of their seats at the Prudential Center.
Well, almost everyone.
After his goal, the camera panned to Hughes’ parents, Jim and Ellen Hughes. Ellen was cheering and fist-bumping with the person beside her. While fans throughout the building also cheered, Jim was sitting down with a relatively subdued reaction.

Following the 3-1 Devils victory, Jack was asked about what it meant to have the support of his mom in the stands.
That’s when he explained what his dad was really up to.
“I know where my parents sit so I can see them throughout the game,” Hughes told Rachel Herzog of MSG Networks following the win.
“I can see my dad, he’s got the phone out, he’s watching the Canucks game on his phone while he’s watching this game… It’s pretty funny.”

The dedication has to be admired.
If Jim did indeed watch the entire Canucks game on his phone, he would have been able to witness both Jack and Quinn score last night.
While Jack buried his first of the season for the Devils with a beautiful shot, Quinn Hughes also registered his first of the season with a long-distance empty-net goal.

The performance of the Devils will be something that Canucks fans are monitoring this year, after rumours about Quinn’s departure picked up steam throughout 2025.
Having Quinn bolt to New Jersey would certainly alleviate Jim’s need to watch the Canucks on his phone while sitting in the Prudential Center to watch his two other sons play.
New Jersey is currently off to a 3-1 start, with wins over the Tampa Bay Lightning, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Florida Panthers.
