Police are investigating a serious incident that occurred near the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal on Wednesday afternoon and have now provided a heartbreaking update.
According to West Vancouver Police, the incident occurred at around 3:30 p.m., and officers and emergency officials responded to reports of pedestrians pinned underneath a transit bus.
Despite lifesaving efforts, a four-year-old boy was pronounced deceased at the scene. His mother was transported to Lions Gate Hospital and is in critical condition. Police say a second woman was also taken to hospital and is in stable condition. She is believed to be a family friend.
The driver of the bus is cooperating with investigators and is being interviewed by police. He has been identified as a TransLink employee. The bus involved is undergoing mechanical inspections.
In a statement on Wednesday evening, TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn said the organization is “heartbroken by the tragic incident.”
“Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this devastating event,” he stated.
“We also want to acknowledge the impact this may have on those who witnessed what happened.” Quinn added that TransLink is supporting police with their investigation.
The West Vancouver Police Department is working closely with the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) and the Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) branch in its investigation. Police say that while the investigation is in its early stages, preliminary findings suggest that speed was not a factor.
“This is a life-altering and heartbreaking incident that has profoundly impacted the victims, their families, witnesses, and the broader community as a whole,” said police in a statement, adding that anyone who is struggling after witnessing the event should reach out to victim services.
West Vancouver Police are requesting any witnesses who may have dashcam or other video footage from the area of Keith Road and Bay Street around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday to reach out to their non-emergency line at 604-925-7300, quoting file number 25-5042.
