70 homes evacuated in Kelowna due to wildfires

Dec 20 2017, 12:23 am

Around 70 homes were evacuated in West Kelowna overnight due to the rapid growth of the Westside Road fire.

Emergency crews went door to door in the middle of the night asking people to pack their belongings and leave their homes.

According to Fire Information Officer Kelsey Winter, the fire is 0% contained and is now 175 hectares (1.75 sq. kms) in size.

“Crews worked on site overnight to extinguish hot spots in the subdivision and despite downslope winds and aggressive fire behaviour, they were able to protect any structures from loss in the Shelter Cove area,” Winter told Vancity Buzz.

Fire crews will include two 20 person sustained action crews, as well as two helicopters and additional air support. No injuries have been reported.

Evacuees are being asked to register for assistance if they need it with the Emergency Support Services Reception Centre located in the Westside Lions Community Hall.
