Busy Metro Vancouver highway could face delays until Christmas due to lane closures

A major construction project in Metro Vancouver is closing lanes on a busy stretch of Highway 99, and drivers are being warned to “expect delays.”
The City of Delta and the Ministry of Transportation and Transit are advising drivers and commuters that the left lanes in both directions, between Exit 20 and Exit 28, will be closed until Thursday, Dec. 25.
The closures on the 3.6 km long stretch are part of roadwork being completed to support the 148-acre Parkwood Industrial Estates business park in Delta.

“Watch for traffic control. Expect delays. General-purpose traffic to use the middle and bus lane temporarily,” added DriveBC online.
The extended lane closures on the Metro Vancouver highway come just weeks after a section of it was closed for over a month as work progressed on the new 78th Street interchange.
According to the City of Delta, the interchange will feature a new overpass at 78th Street, the relocation of Burns Drive, and new traffic circles at 80th Street and 88th Street, all designed to enhance safety, improve traffic flow, and increase access to Highway 99.

“The 78th Street Interchange Project will improve travel safety and efficiency on Highway 99, better connecting Delta’s residents and local farming community and easing the traffic burden on the Matthews Interchange,” added Beedie online.
“The work is designed along the Highway 99 in Delta, from approximately 78th Street to 88th Street. During the construction phase, traffic management and detour plans will take place on and adjacent to Highway 99.”
Beedie is targeting a completion of the 78th Street Interchange Project next winter.
