A car fire, attempted assault on a police officer, and a police-involved shooting led to the closure of Hastings Street near Cassiar Street in Vancouver this afternoon.
According to Vancouver Police, officers were called to the area just after 1 p.m. to respond to reports of a car fire at the McDonald’s restaurant parking lot. However, when they attempted to keep the public away from the fire until firefighters were able to arrive to the scene, a man with a knife allegedly came at the officers.
In response, gunshots were fired by the officers, and the man was subsequently arrested and transported to hospital for gunshot and stab wounds.
The 28-year-old suspect in the incident is associated with the burning car and remains in hospital in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.
The investigation is still in its early stages; police have identified several witnesses and continue to canvass any video footage from the area.
Following procedure for a police-involved shooting, the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is on-site to determine whether there may have been any wrongdoing by police.
