Founded in Los Angeles, #HashtagLunchbag is a movement dedicated to utilizing social media to bring awareness to and eliminate hunger needs in local communities. The initiative was started on Christmas Day in 2012 by six friends after recognizing a common desire to create their own volunteer experience through random acts of kindness.
Over the course of 9 months, it has spawned to over 15 cities including New York City, Toronto, Boulder, Atlanta, San Francisco, Detroit, Houston and DC to name a few. The campaign focuses on preparing well balanced, bagged lunches for those in need. It is the initial program of LA based non profit organization, The Living Through Giving Foundation that is dedicated to inspiring people of all backgrounds to give back through fun and socially engaging activities. To date, the #HashtagLunchbag movement has fed over 10,000 people worldwide.
Here in Vancouver, the campaign began in May 2013 and is held monthly at the Vancouver Urban Winery on 55 Dunlevy Street. With the unique ability to attract young adults due to its heavy usage of social media, #HashtagLunchbag brings between 80-150 volunteers each month to help assemble the lunches for Vancouver’s Downtown East Side. The lunches consist of a ham, cheese, lettuce sandwich, cookie, piece of fruit and bottle of water and are distributed by the volunteers to the community. Children, accompanied by a guardian, are also welcome to come and participate. There is plenty to do for everyone and we need all the help we can get!
To date, the Vancouver #HashtagLunchbag campaign has fed over 3300 people.
