Happy Planet's "Grow for Good" campaign

Kids at Vancouver Montessori put their knowledge of urban farming to use last week as part of Happy Planet’s “Grow for Good” campaign. The organization partnered with Tricia Sedgwick of The World in a Garden to teach kids about where food comes from and how to grow their own fresh food. Last month the kids planted herbs in the cut off bottoms of Happy Planet juice cartons. Today, they transplanted the seedlings to the school garden.

“We are looking to inspire younger generations to ask questions about what they eat and where it comes from,” said Happy Planet founder Randal Ius. “Creating a ‘Grow for Good’ juice carton herb garden is a fun and creative activity that helps kids get excited about and develop a life-long enthusiasm for fresh food.”

Duncan Martin from DailyEggs.com was also on hand to teach the kids about chickens and their role in farming. Several truths were unearthed during the afternoon:

  •    Weeds are not inherently bad, they’re just unwelcome in the garden
  •    The egg did in fact come before the chicken
  •         Fresh food tastes extra delicious
