Happy High Five Day to spread love in Downtown Vancouver

Barney Stinson would be all over this. A project aimed at creating happiness and spontaneity in downtown Vancouver is set to hit the streets in May.

‘Happy High Five Day’ on May 9, organized by 16-year-old Laine Wishart from North Vancouver, will feature a large high-five march of over 75 people walking the streets of Downtown to high-five pedestrians and expand the crowd of high-fivers throughout the day.

“The only thing holding us back from being truly happy and self-expressed is ourselves,” Wishart said. “As a Vancouverite, I noticed we tend to be really withdrawn and uncommunicative with each other. At some point along the way, I discovered that happiness is found when creating it for others. This event gives us the opportunity to generate love and happiness for ourselves and every person we pass, and as a result the city of Vancouver will be inevitably enriched and transformed as a whole.”

The day will also include an opening ceremony featuring a choreographed high-five dance, high-five games and workshops and a special appearance from the West Coast Hug Emporium.

Happy High Five Day will occur on Saturday, May 9 beginning at 1 p.m. at the Vancouver Art Gallery. The march will make then its way down Robson St., Denman St. and throughout English Bay.
