Hapa Izakaya closes Kitsilano Hapa Beach location

The Kitsilano location of Hapa Izakaya was the second one in what ultimately became a cherished Canadian mini-chain, but this Sunday the restaurant closed its doors for good after eight years.

Co-owner Justin Ault shared a message about the closure on Hapa Izakaya’s Facebook page: “[Co-owner] Lea [Ault] and I offer our profound appreciation to our staff, neighbours and regulars who have contributed so much to the success of Hapa Kits over the years. We are going to miss our second restaurant baby but look forward to new opportunities.”

Hapa’s first location opened on Robson in 2003, ushering in a new era in casual-upscale Japanese small plates-style dining. Just last year, Hapa’s Kitsilano location rebranded as Hapa Beach, points out the Georgia Straight.

“Farewell Hapa Beach! We will miss you!” Hapa Izakaya posted to Facebook Monday morning, including this photo:

Hapa Izakaya continues to operate three Vancouver locations, as well as two concepts in Toronto and one in Calgary.
