7 places to find Hanukkah eats in Vancouver

Hanukkah, the eight night Jewish Festival of Lights, begins this year on Sunday, December 6 and ends the evening of Monday, December 14.

Along with special songs and games, the festivities include eating Hanukkah foods, which have been prepared in oil, including latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts), among other edible delights.

With a variety of eateries selling a myriad of sweet and savoury eats, crafted especially for this annual celebration, here’s our guide on where to pick up a wide range of Hanukkah fare.

Solly’s Bagelry

This long-standing bakery prepares a range of Jewish staples based on old-world traditions, including deep-fried latkes (which can be bought either fresh or frozen), house-made apple sauce, and authentic sufganiyot.

Those on the lookout for Hanukkah edibles will find an assortment of treats at Breka Bakery, including loaves of challah (braided bread), kifeles or kuffles (crescent-shaped pastries wrapped around cream cheese fillings and dusted with cinnamon and sugar), and jelly-filled donuts.

While this Vancouver-based bakery specializes in bagels, it also prepares a variety of traditional rugolachs (crescent-shaped pastries). Purdys’ kosher certified Star of David Lollies sell out extremely quickly over Hanukkah. So if you’re after a few be sure to stock up on them as soon as you can. Circular in shape, these chocolates cost $2 each, or three for $5. Not every Purdys sells the Hanukkah-inspired confectionary so it’s best to call ahead to see if your nearest location carries them.
