7th Annual Gypsy Jazz Festival at The Rogue Folk Club

Dec 19 2017, 3:21 pm

This Saturday, April 13, The Rogue Folk Club provides Vancouver with a taste of Gypsy jazz. The renowned lineup consists of the Mark Atkinson Trio, Lache Cercel and Roma Swing Ensemble. Saturday’s performance is a part of the 7th Annual Gypsy Jazz Festival. Gypsy jazz is a style of jazz music that originated in France during the 1930s. If you are not familiar with this type of music, why not experience it this Saturday?

Marc Atkinson‘s compositions are punchy, driving and rhythmically inventive. They take the guitar beyond the usual repertoire and sound. The tunes have a fiery but elegant style, infused with a catchy blend of influences. All the while maintaining the laid-back humour and casual “good time feel” of Canada’s West Coast. His picking has been described as flawless, surprise-filled, sizzling and supremely melodic. His music is original, complex and challenging in its conception and delivery but remains accessible and absorbing. With Brett Marten on rhythm and Joey Smith on bass, the music of this fine trio welcomes all listeners aboard for an intriguing, exhilarating and unforgettable ride.

To say that Lache Cercel (pronounced almost like Lackey Churchill) is a classically trained violinist from Romania would be like saying that Eric Clapton can play the guitar. He is an enormously gifted musician, equally at home with the classics, jazz or gypsy music. A devotee of Stephane Grappelli and of Yehudi Menuhin, Lache can bring “serious” music down to earth, and make gypsy jazz soar into the highest echelons. Driving the rhythms in The Roma Swing Ensemble are guitarists Don Ogilvie and Steven Nikleva and bassist Sam Shoichet – and probably a few more musicians besides. With Lache, you never quite know what he’s going to do next, but you can rest assured that it will be brilliant music!

The Rogue Folk Club offers audiences the opportunity to experience and enjoy cultural music from accomplished music and singers in a relaxed and intimate setting.  Their mission statement is “To promote and foster folk music and its cultural heritage through concerts, workshops, publications and other such means, thereby bringing the experience of folk music to as wide an audience as possible.” Check out their website to see their upcoming concerts and information on membership.
