Your guide to amazing summer hair

Summer is here and to ensure you’re ready, here are five steps to keep your tresses in optimal condition.

Tip 1: Wear your sunscreen

It’s not just our skin that needs sunscreen; our hair and scalp also need sun protection. UVA and UVB rays can wreak havoc by fading your hair color and drying it out, as well as burning your scalp. Wearing a hat is an excellent way to shield your hair and scalp from the sun. In addition to protecting your head with a hat, scarf or head wrap, I would also recommend a line of product containing ingredients which provide UV protection – such as Bumble and Bumble Color minded. The line consists of a sulphate free shampoo, conditioner, and polish and is excellent for colour treated hair or anyone who is need of a gentle line with UV protection. Also, try some Invisible Oil on mid-lengths and ends for extra UV protection and shine.

Tip 2: Hydrate

I recommend using a masque once a week to soften and detangle the hair. A quenching masque will rehydrate without weighing the hair down. Using a hair oil at night on your mid-lengths and ends will also help give luminosity and softness to your strands while you sleep. Try the Invisible Oil by Bumble and Bumble on wet or dry hair for your thirsty summer locks.

Tip 3: Clarify the hair

If you’re at the beach or pool, enjoying some refreshing swims, chances are you have build-up. If your hair is lacking lustre it could be a build-up of mineral deposits and chlorine. Whisk it away with Bumble and Bumble Sunday shampoo once a week and follow up with a deep treatment.

Tip 4: Be gentle

Hair is weakest when wet and can stretch a lot, easily taking it to the point of breaking. Avoid handling wet hair as much as possible. My recommendation is not to begin styling your hair until it is around 80-90% dry. Also be sure to use a wide tooth comb as it has a lot less tension and will reduce breakage. Always comb your hair working from bottom to the top to loosen knots more efficiently.

Tip 5: Turn down the heat – on your hair that is

Excessive heat styling can really wear out the hair’s cuticle. Who wants to spend all that time heat styling in the summer anyway? We have better things to do. Air-dry the hair as much as possible. My favourite product that helps me get the most out of a wavy/curly hair texture is Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray. This product delivers an incredible texture to the hair that makes your hair look beachy and salt water sexy. It also contains sea kelp extract so your hair gets the perfect balance of grit without dehydrating. Spray it root to ends and scrunch for a beach goddess effect like Kate Hudson below:
