A North Vancouver man has officially shattered the Grouse Grind record, raising the bar on one of B.C.’s most iconic fitness feats.

Sean Green shattered the Grouse Grind record during the 2025 Multi Grouse Grind Challenge on Friday, completing 21 full ascents of the steep trail between 4 a.m. and 10 p.m.

That’s over 29,000 vertical feet, roughly the height of Mount Everest, from sea level to summit and back down again.

The previous record stood at 19 climbs, first set in 2019 and matched in 2024.

Green’s achievement was part of the annual Multi Grouse Grind Challenge, the only sanctioned event where ultra-competitive hikers test their limits on what’s often dubbed “Mother Nature’s Stairmaster.”

This year, 100 participants took part, clocking a collective 915 grinds in 19 hours and raising $46,000 and counting for North Shore Rescue (NSR).

While Sean Green set the bar highest, James Stewart and Fion Chen weren’t far behind in this year’s Grouse Grind record attempt.

Stewart of Vancouver completed 20 grinds, while Chen of Burnaby led the women’s field with a jaw-dropping 17 ascents.

“Seeing the drive and passion of all competitors and unwavering support from support parties throughout this gruelling challenge is beyond inspiring,” said Emily Leak, Communications Manager at Grouse Mountain Resort, in a press release.

“The Multi Grouse Grind Challenge is the North Shore’s most unique athletic event, and all participants should be incredibly proud.”

Funds raised will go directly toward training and equipment for North Shore Rescue, a volunteer-run group that’s been saving lives across B.C.’s rugged terrain since 1965.

“We’re honoured by the ongoing support from Grouse Mountain and all participants in this year’s Multi Grouse Grind Challenge,” said Scott Merriman, North Shore Rescue Team Leader.

“The supporting funds raised will enable invaluable training initiatives and the purchase of life-saving equipment so NSR can continue to show up for our community when they need us most.”

The Multi Grouse Grind Challenge is part of the Grouse Mountain Summer Race Series, which continues with the Grouse Grind Mountain Run on September 7. Registration opens soon.
