The Grouse Grind will officially open Saturday, May 17, for the 2014 season.
According to Grouse Mountain Resort, “Mother Nature’s Stairmaster” trail will open tomorrow and its hours are from 6:15 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The trail has been closed since October 2013. Over the last few weeks, Metro Vancouver Regional District crews have been working on the trail to repair it from weathering, just in time for this summer season’s crowds. Locals living near base camp saw helicopters flying in materials to repair the trail from winter weathering.
Approximately 100,000 people complete the Grind annually, which is a 853 metre vertical gain over a distance of 2.9 kilometres. The average person can finish the climb between 90 to 120 minutes, although many are capable of completing it in under an hour. It was also recently named as one of the world’s most dangerous hikes.
Last year, two Grouse Grind records were set: Oliver Bibby set a new record of 16 Grouse Grinds in a single day while Amy Tso clocked her 1,000th accumulated hike up the mountain. Both individuals completed their feats for charity.
