Free stuff up for grabs at Granville Connector celebration tomorrow

There’s going to be a celebration at the Granville Connector this week, and as part of the festivities, there will be a bunch of free stuff up for grabs.

The festivities get underway at 3 p.m. on Aug. 14 and will end at 6 p.m. The starting location for the event is Burrard Slopes Park, which is located at West 6th Avenue and Fir Street, next to the Arbutus Greenway. At 4 p.m., Our Community Bikes will also be hosting a free route planning workshop, and gravel buddies will be leading a group ride across the Granville Bridge at 5 p.m.

It’s a family-friendly event, open to all ages, and TransLink has shared some details about what to expect, including the free items you’ll be able to get your hands on.

Aside from general free “prizes” to be won, Our Community Bikes will be doing free bike repairs on site. Mobi and Lime will also be giving people discount codes to use their services for cheaper rates.

The BC Cycling Coalition’s Kids on Wheels will also be hosting a kids’ balance bike course, and there will be live music from Sacha Kalman.

“This new upgrade is part of the regional network that we’re working to build and ‘bridges’ a critical gap for all those who rely on active transportation to get to and from downtown Vancouver,” TransLink says.

TransLink, the City of Vancouver, HUB Cycling and BEST Mobility will also have information booths for folks who are keen to learn more about the Granville Connector and related issues.

The connector officially opened last month. Two vehicle lanes on the west side of the Granville Bridge were converted into a continuous, two-way separated active transportation route between the northernmost end of the Arbutus Greenway at the intersection of Fir Street and West 5th Avenue and downtown Vancouver.

The existence of the Granville Connector, with further enhancements over time, was also taken into account for the City’s long-term strategy of revitalizing the Granville Entertainment District, which City Council approved in June 2025. This also calls for the potential of turning Granville Street within the downtown Vancouver peninsula into a car-free street for pedestrians and events.
