The 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards honouring the best in film and television, took place in Los Angeles Sunday night and handed out trophies to some expected, and surprising, winners.
Hosted by four-time host Ricky Gervais, the award show is the first major indicator of what is to come at the prestigious Academy Awards happening on February 28. Films like The Revenant, Room, and The Martian gained major buzz leading up to the show, while Empire, Outlander, and Game of Thrones were big contenders on the TV side.
But the winners always happen to throw even the most experienced predictions to the wind. Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle was the big winner for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy as well as for Best Actor in a Televsion Series – Musical or Comedy. While many may not have heard of Mozart, it beat out the likes of Veep, Transparent, Orange is the New Black, Silicon Valley, and Hulu’s Casual.
The biggest winner of the night was the team behind Alejandro G. Inarritu’s The Revenant, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The film, shot largely in Alberta, nabbed Globes for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director, and Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama, giving the production a lofty head start going into the Oscars.

Other winners included Jon Hamm for Mad Men, Lady Gaga for American Horror Story: Hotel, Taraji P. Henson for Empire, and Sylvestor Stallone for Creed, his first nomination at the Globes in 40 years.
While the awards were clearly the draw of the night, host Ricky Gervais also kept the audience on their toes. The controversial Brit made headlines several years ago after reportedly upsetting the audience of A-List actors with a monologue more closely resembling a roast. While poking fun at NBC and The Hollywood Foreign Press for continuing to invite him back, Gervais quipped about the bad blood he might start during the show.
“Shut up you disgusting, pill-popping sexual deviant scum. I want to do this monologue and go into hiding. Not even Sean Penn will stop me. Snitch!”
He also poked fun at Ben Affleck’s reported infidelity, Caitlyn Jenner’s driving record, and of course, Donald Trump.
