Get your Greek on at Galinis for their 10th Anniversary

Dec 20 2017, 1:50 am

It’s hard to believe a decade has passed since Galini first opened its doors. Tucked away incognito on Fraser Highway, this bustling restaurant seemed to have come out of nowhere. “We never meant for it to be a speakeasy type of place” jokes Kostas, the middle brother of three who each have roles at the restaurant. “But somehow people are still surprised at what’s inside.”

“We wanted to create a place where the community could come for honest, wholesome homemade food,” says husband and wife duo John and Angela. On October 15 they celebrate just that—a decade of their family run restaurant, Galini Greek Kouzina & Grill.

The atmosphere is warm, cozy and captures the energy of the Mediterranean. It’s vibrant, yet the intricate multi-level floors and warm tones make it feel intimate. Having just apprenticed for world-renowned architect Rem Koolhaas, Thanasis says it’s exciting to help breed such a restaurant in Langley stating: “why should Vancouver have all the fun?”

“We all have our accents in the restaurant,” says Kostas, who has been working hard to introduce inventive cocktails inspired by bars in Athens and London to the menu. The youngest brother also plays an integral role – George is all about bringing out bold flavours in the kitchen.

Their food is of course the focus and some of John’s specialties include fluffy spanakopita, famous mousaka, and slow roasted lamb – marinated for five hours before cooking. Also, you can’t miss their tender grilled ribs – they are juicy yet crispy at the same time.

Galini keeps true to the Greek tradition of feeding a belly well. The portions hardly leave any room for dessert but you cannot say no to mama’s homemade ekmek custard!

On October 15th, in honor of their 10th Anniversary, Galini will be partying as the Greek do. While the restaurant will be open for regular dinner guests, 8:00 pm will dawn a festive cocktail hour filled with live music and wine tasting.

“When you think of Greece, it’s all about sharing food, drinks and socializing,” says Kostas. The family is encouraging the community to come celebrate a decade of culture, family and honest food.
