Generocksity: Good times and good deeds

While he was in Israel volunteering as a paramedic, Zeke Blumenkrans had an epiphany. The third year kinesiology student had just lost a good friend to cancer and, mere days later, he witnessed the birth of a baby in the back of an ambulance. In the wake of this circle of life, it struck him — he wanted to use the emotion he was feeling to create something positive.

Upon his return to Vancouver, Blumenkrans organized an event in tribute to his late comrade and subsequently raised over $2,500 in donations to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, the place where he had originally met his friend. As of that evening, Generocksity came to life.

Generocksity is a non-profit organization that operates with the purpose of educating young adults on the importance of philanthropy. Led by Blumenkrans and an inspiring group of fellow UBC students, Generocksity hosts events at various locations where people can gather, listen to live music, and socialize with 100% of the proceeds gained going to benefit a Lower Mainland charity.

Giving back is something that Blumenkrans and his team believe can be easily integrated into young lives, once presented with the right tools that allow them to see how accessible and affordable it really can be. It’s as simple as this: you can go out on a Saturday night, have a couple of drinks with your pals, and, at the same time, help out those in need. It’s a concept that’s brilliant and effective yet so totally uncomplicated.

And though Generocksity has only been in operation for a year, they have already made significant contributions to the community — their charitable parties have raised over $12,000 for Ronald McDonald House, Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, and the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre.

The organization looks to increase that number with another event this Friday at Joe’s Apartment. Their Welcome Back Bash will feature performances from local musicians Jaguar and Sam Tudor, and DJs Sid Smooth and DJ Zeus, with all proceeds going towards the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre. Tickets are just $10 online and $15 at the door. What better way to start off the New Year than with good music, good times, and good deeds?
