The Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix 2012

The Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix is a famous Canadian criterium bicycle race that attracts North America’s best cyclists. It’s a free summer events where crowds nearing 30,000  line the course just inches away from Olympic caliber riders flying by at over 50kms. The race is very fast and the challenging course and large fields of riders typically leads to several crashes.

It features the largest winning prizes for a criterium in North America. One of the past winners was Lance Armstrong, who won it in 1991.The race has been brough back after a three-year hiatus thanks to Gastown-based Global Relay who have invested $1million in the race over the next 5 years.

WHEN:

Wednesday July 11. Opening ceremonies at 5:45 pm. Women go at 6:15 pm, men go at 7:30 pm.

People are encouraged to just come on down to Gastown after work.

WHERE:

Vancouver most historic neighbourhood, Gastown. The race starts at the steam clock, does a hairpin turn around Shine, goes down Cordova, turns left on Carrall, around Gassy Jack and then back up water street. Men do 50 laps totalling 60 kms. Women do 30 laps totalling 36 kms.
