Garland beating up Zegras had his Vancouver Canucks teammates talking postgame

Vancouver Canucks winger Conor Garland isn’t the biggest player, but that doesn’t mean he’s the guy you want to pick a fight with.Ā

Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras learned that the hard way when he got tangled up Garland at the end of last night’s game. The two players, neither listed at more than 185 pounds, started throwing haymakers at each other.

Garland waved Zegras over, and the fight began. While there was a bit of wrestling to start, Garland soon found his balance and started swinging, landing several big shots.

The crowd went crazy as Garland hit Zegras with several uppercuts. Rogers Arena burst into a “Co-nor Gar-land” chant.

Garland’s Canucks teammates loved the fire and fight and were more than happy to talk about it postgame.

“We were all laughing,” said Kiefer Sherwood. “That’s what we need. We need a lot of grit, playoff push, so we’re going to need a lot of efforts like that from a lot of guys. It doesn’t have to be fighting but just standing up for each other and sticking together through thick and thin.”

The tilt marked the fourth fight of Garland’s career. He got in another one earlier this season against Erik Haula on the New Jersey Devils.

“That was pretty cool to see him and Zegras fight. I think it got the fans pumped up. I actually don’t mind that. Gars stuck up for the team and himself; good for him,” said head coach Rick Tocchet.

It was a chaotic end to the hockey game as this all went down with just five seconds left. More fights broke out across the ice, but when the dust settled, the Canucks managed to hold on for a 3-2 victory.

“He got some good uppercuts in there,” laughed Drew O’Connor. “He’s feisty, he’s a great teammate as well, can do anything for the team. I knew that about him, but that was great to see him step up there.”

It was a crucial two points for a Canucks team that is in the midst of a playoff race. They’re now tied with the Calgary Flames for the second Wild Card spot in the Western Conference, although the Flames own the tiebreaker.
