Future Free Agents: Mason Raymond

With all the talk about NHL Free Agency, Vancity Buzz takes a look at who the Canucks have eligible for free agency next year. This short series continues today with winger Mason Raymond.

Mason Raymond
Current Cap Hit: $2,275,000
Previous Seasons Stats:
2010 – 82 GP/25 Goals/28 Assists
2011 – 70 GP/15 Goals/24 Assists
2012 – 55 GP/10 Goals/10 Assists

Just the mere mention of his name is enough to conjure up comical images of the speedy winger falling over… and over… and over. Such was the case when it was announced the Canucks had re-signed the Alberta native to a one year contract after a rather dismal year coming off a horrific back injury.

Despite however you may feel about Raymond, it’s important to remember what he’s capable of when he’s on his game. His speed becomes an asset instead of a liability and he’s capable of using it to keep possession in the offensive zone. Coupled with an in-form shot, and you have a reliable source of secondary scoring.

If he does have a good year, it’s likely the Canucks will try to keep him around on a cheap-ish contract (less than 3 million), but a lot of his status depends on whether or not Vancouver ends up signing Shane Doan and how their younger players do in the AHL and junior next year. Simply put, Raymond’s chances of staying in Vancouver for the 2013-2014 season are not too high.

Prediction: Will test the free agent market.

If there’s a lockout: With players like Nicklas Jensen, Anton Rodin, and Jordan Schroeder on the come-up it’s unlikely that Raymond will be kept around when Vancouver has the opportunity to give their young talent a chance to break into the pro roster.
