There is no shortage of excitement regarding the fact that NHL players have returned to the Olympic stage.
Hockey fans across the globe have been waiting for this moment for over a decade, and finally got their wish with the men’s side getting underway on Wednesday.
While many fans were and continue to be excited, one individual’s excitement has resulted in an arrest.
As reported by NBC News, a 44-year-old Slovakian man who has been wanted for 16 years was arrested after returning to Italy to watch his nation take on Finland on Wednesday.
Police were able to find the individual after he had checked in at a guesthouse on the outskirts of Milan. He has since been taken to the central San Vittore prison.
Local Carabinieri police say that the man committed a string of shop thefts in Italy in 2010. He was originally set to serve 11 months and seven days of prison time before fleeing the country, resulting in him landing on Italy’s wanted list.
Though the unnamed individual was unable to watch, the Slovaks were able to pull off an upset in their Olympic opener, defeating Finland by a 4-1 final. They were led by Montreal Canadiens forward Juraj Slafkovsky, who had two goals and an assist in the win.
Slovakia remains a long shot to win gold in men’s hockey at the Olympics, though being able to do so may make prison time for this individual a bit easier to stomach.
