Friday Facts: BC Place Renovations

Dec 19 2017, 11:40 am

Renovations to BC place will be commencing shortly as general contractor Dominion Fairmile has been awarded a $65 million contract to renovate the interior of the aging stadium.

Some of the work to be done to the interior will include new signage (internal and external), new seating, 8 new entrances, better lighting and flooring. To see the complete list check out this link. The improvements will be completed by late 2009.

For those of you that don’t know the stadium is also set to get a new retractable roof. However, it should be noted that this roof will not be ready until after 2010 Olympics. Although a retractable roof is long over due, it should have been in place in time for the Olympics. Chalk this one up as another screw up by Gordo and his crew. Nonetheless it will be ready for the Summer of 2011.

I am more interested in the look of the stadium once the new roof is in place. Apparently the city’s nimby’s are already in an uproar as the 50 foot masts used to retract the fabric roof will have an impact on their mountain views. If it goes through as planned I believe it will be a huge improvement over the giant marshmallow dome we got now.

The Whitecaps will also be playing at the new BC Place. I for one will be attending more Whitecap and Lions game under the new retractable roof.
