Free concerts at Granville Island on Canada Day 2015

Canada Day is sure to bring fun, fireworks, family and time under the sun. Granville Island is a hive of festivities, in large part due to the FREE concerts that happen all day on July 1.

We’ve got you covered from noon until dusk on Canada Day, with a full itinerary of live music shows.

Proliferasian & Little Giant Chinese Chamber Orchestra

A remarkable dialogue between jazz combo and orchestra, and between Western avant-garde sounds and Chinese traditions. Led by Lan Tung (Orchid Ensemble) on erhu and voice, with Kevin Romain drums, JP Carter trumpet/electronics, and Colin Cowan bass, Proliferasian is joined by the Little Giant Chinese Chamber Orchestra (conducted by Chih-Sheng Chen) for a striking, varied set full of intensity and texture.

Argentine pianist performs everything for fun under the sun: Latin-infused jazz, tango and some bumping dance tracks. A rhapsodic and unique hybrid of Tango, Latin jazz, swinging blues, Afro-Cuban, Arabic, Salsa, and ’70s era Herbie Hancock cosmic funk-outs!

Stian Westerhus

Norwegian guitarist and composer Stian Westerhus (Nils Petter Molvaer) is one of the most distinctive players in modern music. Drawing from experimental electronic music and prog rock, Westerhus has forged a fiercely personal musical vision. Live, he processes his sounds on the fly, weaving hypnotic sounds from delayed bowed guitars, dealing harsh sonic stabs or miniature clusters of noise, brooding hums or numb feedback.

Tambura Rasa

Serbian-born guitarist Ivan Tucakov has distilled his world travels into Tambura Rasa’s unique blend of Balkan, Middle Eastern, Indian, and Latin roots musical styles. Calling Vancouver home since the early 2000’s, his hotshot band features local greats Colin Maskell sax/flute, Robin Layne percussion, Kerry Galloway bass, Randall Stoll drums/percussion.

Kate Hammett-Vaughan Quintet

Vancouver-based Kate Hammett-Vaughan is adventurous and assured and her hip vocals have earned her three JUNO nominations. Coda Magazine calls her simply “the finest jazz standards singer in Canada.” Enjoy intense ballads, swinging standards and sonic explorations. With Chris Gestrin piano, André Lachance bass, Jon Bentley tenor sax, Tom Foster drums.
