Free admission at Fair at the PNE extended all day

Dec 20 2017, 1:06 am

First it was shutdown, then it was reopened. Within 30 minutes, PNE staff rescinded a decision to shutdown the Fair at the PNE and the PlayLand amusement park due to the safety hazards brought by the windstorm.

Gate admission for the Fair at the PNE’s remaining operating hours today will be free for all ages. However, there is much confusion given an earlier decision to close the fairgrounds.

Attractions, rides, shows and concerts were initially shutdown and cancelled just before 2 p.m. Vendors closed shop and thousands of people left the fairgrounds after being told the Fair would be closed for the remainder of the day. At the time, the original plan was to honour parking and ride passes on another day.

But then at approximately 3:30 p.m., social media accounts for the PNE announced that both The Fair and PlayLand reopened after Environment Canada had advised that the high wind warning had been cancelled.

PNE has also confirmed that tonight’s concert headlined by Tom Cochrane is back on.

This follows yesterday’s announcement that admission would be free on Saturday and Sunday for those who enter the gates during the first two opening hours.

Following today’s events, there will still be free admission into the fairgrounds on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • UPDATE AT 3:53 p.m. – The PNE and PlayLand have reopened, but 75 per cent of the rides are closed. The reason is unclear at this time.
