Seven-month closure of a segment of Fraser Highway for SkyTrain construction begins April

The provincial government’s Surrey-Langley SkyTrain project office office has confirmed the start date for the seven-month closure of a segment of Fraser Highway.
Project leaders first informed Surrey City Council in January 2025 of the need to conduct a prolonged closure of the arterial roadway to enable construction.

Today, in a bulletin, the project office confirmed the closure will begin on April 1, 2025 and continue through the end of October 2025.
This entails the full closure of the segment of Fraser Highway between 140 Street and 96 Avenue within the western half of Green Timbers Urban Forest, including the closure of the vehicle lanes, pedestrian sidewalks, and multi-use pathways.
The seven-month closure of this busy segment of Fraser Highway is necessary to accommodate the overhead construction of Green Timbers Station, located on the median of Fraser Highway just east of 140 Street. This station features a design similar to that of the Millennium Line’s Brentwood Town Centre Station, with a median-based design that features a mezzanine level and a pedestrian overpass to establish the main entrance.

All other stations for the project are located on a side of Fraser Highway.
The construction activities at the Fraser Highway closure area include new electrical utilities, roadwork, foundation construction, and guideway and station construction. This will be a one-time prolonged full closure for the project.
Vehicle traffic will primarily be redirected to 96 Avenue.
As well, there will be intermittent overnight closures of Fraser Highway between 96 Avenue and 148 Street within the east side of Green Timbers Urban Forest, with the overnight closures running from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. as required.

The municipal government previously noted that the segment of Fraser Highway within Green Timbers sees about 28,000 vehicles per day.
Major construction work on the $6-billion, 16-km-long Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension of the Expo Line first began in November 2024.
Construction is well underway on building the foundations for hundreds of columns and pillars that will support the 100% elevated route between the existing King George Station and Langley City Centre. By Summer 2025, four special gantry launcher cranes will be actively working to install the pre-cast concrete segments of the elevated guideway.
If all goes as planned, this Expo Line extension, adding eight new stations to the SkyTrain network, will open in late 2029.
