Fraser Health is lifting its order forcing gyms and fitness centres closed next week, meaning those waiting to lift heavy again could soon be in luck.

The health authority ordered all gyms and fitness centres closed to prevent coronavirus spread on April 15. But Fraser Health’s chief medical officer Dr. Martin Lavoie is set to lift the order on May 19, according to a news release.

That means gyms, yoga and dance studios, and martial arts facilities that can meet provincial physical distancing measures to protect staff and clients will be allowed to open.

The move is in accordance with Phase 2 of BC’s restart plan, Fraser Health says. All facilities looking to reopen must develop a plan, and guidance is available on the health authority’s website.

Fraser Health oversees Burnaby, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Surrey, New Westminster, Abbotsford, Langley, White Rock, Chilliwack, and Maple Ridge.

Gyms in Vancouver, Richmond, North Vancouver, and West Vancouver will have to wait on word from Vancouver Coastal Health.
