Residents and frequent visitors of the Mount Pleasant area rejoice! The Fox Cabaret is excited to announce the official opening of The Projection Room, an intimate cocktail and snack bar upstairs at 2321 Main Street. Located in what was once the projection booth of the notorious Fox Cinema (North America’s last 35mm adult movie house), the bar will now be open seven days a week from 5 p.m. serving a playful selection of food and drink. This officially completes the launch of the Fox as a multi-room venue operating as both a performance space and a neighbourhood bar.
“Our vision was always to create a permanent home for independent culture in Mount Pleasant, and for over a year now, the venue has been showcasing great music, art, performance, and entertainment on a night-to-night basis,” says co-owner Ernesto Gomez. “Opening The Projection Room will now give people a great reason to drop in anytime to enjoy great bar snacks and cocktails seven nights a week.”
Food and beverage
The food and beverage program is designed by Chris Hesje, Emiliano Rivera and Ernesto Gomez and draws upon the tradition of the movie theatre snack counter. The bite size menu perfectly complements an assortment of both traditional and innovative cocktails.
Atmosphere
Beyond food and drink, the space is unlike any other room in the city and creates an atmosphere for irreverent fun. The Projection room is designed by Scott Cohen (The Acorn, Les Faux Bourgeois, Nuba) and created in collaboration with local artists Maya Beaudry, Graham Landin, Olivia Carmen Meek, Nathalie Paolinelli, and Marie-Helene Tessier. Prepare yourself for leopard print walls (an homage to Lady Brute and Dr. Brute), playful gradients, a sparkle inlaid bar, pink mirror tables, and moody pendant lights (designed by Omer Arbel for Bocci). Beyond the look and feel of the space, The Fox will be programming some of the city’s most esteemed selectors to play records in the room every night.
Regular guest DJs include Neighbour of Homebreakin’ Records, Niña Mendoza of Red Bull Music Academy, Josh Stevenson of Psych Night, Derek D of Pacific Rhythm and many more.
“There’s something really cool happening in Mount Pleasant right now with all the local breweries, restaurants, and cafés opening up,” says Gomez. “It’s starting to become a real culture destination for the whole city.”
Open at 5 p.m. daily, there is no cover for the Projection Room during the week, and before 10 p.m. on the weekends, when it become part of the multi-room weekend parties at the Fox. Additionally, the space is available for private rentals and parties.
