Alcohol violations and damage force cancellation of Metro Vancouver night market

One of Metro Vancouver’s popular night markets will not return this summer, with organizers pointing to “several challenges” that led to its cancellation.
Fort Langley Project (FLP) recently announced on social media that its annual Fort Langley Night Market, known for dozens of vendors, food trucks, and live entertainment, will not continue.
“This decision was not made lightly, as the night market has been a vibrant and cherished event for our community,” said FLP online. “We deeply appreciate the incredible support from everyone who has participated, attended, and contributed to the success of this event.
“However, during the last season, we encountered several challenges that have impacted the night market’s ability to operate as a safe and enjoyable event for all.”

FLP stated that individuals bringing in outside alcohol to the night market and instances of damage to the event site contributed to growing concerns about the event’s sustainability.
“Additionally, the liquor license rules have limited our ability to offer what attendees desire, leading to further dissatisfaction,” explained FLP. “Despite multiple warnings issued to attendees regarding these violations, we cannot put ourselves in a position to be responsible for individuals not following the outlined rules and potentially leading to harmful situations.”
“Our goal is, and has always been, to provide a gathering place for health connection, unfortunately, that has been lost.”

Fort Langley Night Market was a free, family-friendly event from 5 to 10 p.m. on Fridays from June to September. The event showcased local artisans, food vendors, a kids zone, musical artists, and entertainers.
Fans looking forward to this year’s Fort Langley Night Market shared their disappointment on social media.
“That is so unfortunate, because of a few unruly people, everyone has to suffer,” said one commenter.
“Truly disappointing,” added another person. “Hubby and I just moved to Fort Langley last year, and the night market was one of our favourite things to do.”
“It is so sad that alcohol and people’s inability to control themselves have ruined this event for our community,” said another social media user. “It was a lovely time, and it will be missed.”
FLP added that it will investigate other opportunities to engage with the community in the future.
