He played for the Toronto Blue Jays, worked as a broadcaster for Sportsnet, and wrote four baseball books.

But hey, once in a while, even those closest to the game of baseball need a break.

Former Jays’ pitcher Dirk Hayhurst admitted on X during Game 1 of the World Series that this was the first baseball game he’s actually watched in three years.

Well, at least he picked a good time to tune in.

The Ohio native was clear heading into the game that he would be cheering for the last team he ever played MLB games for.

Hayhurst spent two seasons in the MLB, playing for the San Diego Padres in 2008, before joining the Jays in 2009. He played 15 games for the Jays that season, which was his last stint in the majors.

Following the emphatic Game 1 victory for the Blue Jays, the 44-year-old admitted that he probably won’t wait another three years until he watches his next baseball game.

After retiring from baseball, Hayhurst worked as a broadcaster on Sportsnet for a brief stint beginning in 2012. He also wrote for Sportsnet’s website, where his articles can still be read.

He might best be known for the books he’s written since retiring from baseball. Hayhurst has written four novels, with one of them, The Bullpen Gospels, ending up on the New York Times bestsellers list for paperback non-fiction back when it was published in 2010.
