7 foods to try at Surrey Night Market this summer

Dec 19 2017, 11:19 am

Featuring over 40 food vendors from various cultures, each offering a range of tempting cuisines Vancity Buzz has listed 7 fantastic foods you’ve simply got to try at the latest open-air market in Metro Vancouver to launch this summer, Surrey Night Market.

Roasted Corn ($4)

A summer night market staple, roasted corn on the cob is a simple yet utterly scrumptious dish. Cooked over hot coals, then finished with a light glaze, each golden kernel is terrifically sweet, perfectly charred and lightly salted. Corn on the cob is a great market snack as it won’t leave you uncomfortably full, meaning you’ll have plenty of room to sample more market goodies.

Amazebuns ($5)

As the name suggests, Amazebuns specialises in buns. Not just your average buns however, sweet, delicious deep fried buns. Each serving is made up of six small buns, which are soft and pillowy on the inside and perfectly crisp on the outside. Toppings include ice cream, condensed milk, and sugar. For an absolutely winning combo, ask for condensed milk with a scoop of ice cream. Yummo!

Fresco Ensalada – Mixed Juice ($2.50)

The Maiz Kitchen’s fresh juices are an absolute must on a warm Surrey summer’s eve. The Fresco Ensalada (a mix of pineapple, mango, apple and watercress) is positively fruity and refreshingly cool. The stall’s food also needs mentioning, particularly the Pupusas.  A Latin American dish comprising of thick corn flour tortillas, filled with cheese, beans and pork.

Tornado Potato ($5)

No trip to the Surrey Night Market would be complete without a sampling of a Tornado Potato. A jumbo potato, sliced up in a spiral shape, stretched along a skewer, deep fried, and then sprinkled with a topping of your choice – cheddar cheese, sour cream and chives, jalapeño and dill pickle just to name a few. This spud on a stick is a fun and truly delicious snack.

Meat Skewers (3 for $8)

Barbequed meat skewers are always a popular food choice at night markets, and why wouldn’t they be? Grilled to perfection and deliciously marinated, these barbequed treats offer a light and tasty snack. Depending on how hungry you are you can either grab a single stick or a plate full of skewers. The latter option will allow you to try a variety of meats such as beef, lamb, chicken and pork.

Steak Burger ($8)

Thick, juicy steak burgers oozing with flavour and loaded with cheese, mayo, lettuce and tomato is what you’ll find at Sassy Sue’s Kitchen. Perhaps this meal is not the most health conscious of food choices but hey, it sure is tasty!

Mini Donuts (Baker’s Dozen $5)

These adorable bite sized donuts will have you licking your lips in anticipation at the Mollie’s Minis stand. Bought either by the bag or bucket full these doughy and delicious offerings are cooked right before your eyes, and are served hot with a light dusting of sugar. Apart from being fantastically fresh and fluffy, Mollie’s donuts are the ideal treat to share or stuff yourself silly on.
