Food cart permit holders subleasing spaces for 10 times what the city charges

Dec 19 2017, 5:19 pm

The City of Vancouver will not be issuing new food cart permits this year following complaints that some permit holders are renting out their locations for 10 times as much as what the city charges for real permits.

Some subleaseholders are paying as much as $10,000 for their spot and are struggling to establish financially viable businesses.

The freeze on the issuance of new permits will allow the City to review its bylaws and application process for food carts. When the program was first implemented in 2010, the City did not intend for the allowance of food cart permit holders to sublease their locations.
