All five members of Hockey Canada scandal are now back playing

The five hockey players involved in the Hockey Canada sexual assault scandal are all resuming their pro hockey careers.

Carter Hart, Michael McLeod, Alex Formenton, Cal Foote, and Dillon Dube were each accused of sexually assaulting a woman while attending a Hockey Canada gala back in 2018.

This past summer, a not guilty verdict was delivered to the players with no charges being laid. NHL teams were allowed to sign them starting on Oct. 15, but players had to wait until Dec. 1 to start playing games again.

All five players are now back playing pro hockey, though just one is back in the NHL.

1. Carter Hart (Vegas Golden Knights/NHL)

Before the scandal broke, Hart had been a standout goaltender for the Philadelphia Flyers.

To date, he is the only member of the Hockey Canada five to return to the NHL, as the Vegas Golden Knights signed the 27-year-old to a two-year contract on Oct. 26.

“I’m beyond grateful, honoured and excited to be a part of the Golden Knights,” Hart said shortly after signing. “I’ve been out of the game for a year and a half now. I’ve learned a lot, I’ve grown a lot, and just excited to move forward.”

After signing Hart, the Golden Knights released a statement saying they remain “committed to the core values” of their organization and they expect their players to “continue to meet these standards moving forward.”

2. Michael McLeod (Avangard Omsk/KHL)

McLeod had established himself as a full-time NHL player, recording 19 points in 45 games in 2023-24. The 27-year-old has yet to return to North America and is currently playing in Russia with Avangard Omsk of the KHL.

3. Alex Formenton (HC Ambrì-Piotta/Switzerland)

Formenton left the NHL midway through the 2022-23 season after a contract dispute with the Ottawa Senators.

He bolted overseas to join Switzerland’s HC Ambrì-Piotta and has been there ever since. He is currently playing in his third season with the club.

4. Cal Foote (Chicago Wolves/AHL)

Foote spent last season with Liptovsky Mikulas HK in Slovakia.

He opted to return to North America and recently inked a one-year contract with the AHL’s Chicago Wolves, the affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes.

5. Dillon Dube (Springfield Thunderbirds/AHL)

Dillon Dube was a fixture on the Calgary Flames before parting ways after he was identified as one of the accused Hockey Canada players.

Similar to McLeod, Dube spent last season playing in the KHL. He is currently on an AHL pro tryout contract with the Springfield Thunderbirds, an affiliate of the St. Louis Blues.
