Five Hole For Food comes to Vancouver's Granville Street

The story of Five Hole For Food is about as Canadian as it gets.

Richard Loat, along with a few friends, were playing pickup hockey games in downtown Vancouver during the Olympics. Now I can’t imagine why hockey was popular during the first Canadian Winter Olympics in 22 years, but it was. Really popular. Richard decided to take advantage of that by taking his game on the road and asking players and attendants for a can of food. Things quickly escalated and that year they toured 6000km’s in 11 days and raised 6000 lbs of food for people who need it. Being generous and playing hockey? Like I said, as Canadian as it gets.

The rest has been a pretty wild ride for the Five Hole For Food organization. From the humblest of beginnings they have grown into a force in the philanthropic community. Growing year over year, this year’s tour includes 13 cities in 17 days and expects to pass the ¼ million lb mark.

The coolest part about all this is you get to see them do it. Head out to Granville Street on July 20 to see this incredible organization come full circle. All the details can be found on the Facebook Event page but they make it as simple as they can for you. The only thing you need to worry about is a hockey stick, a can (or six) of food and my triple deke.
