81-year-old killed in first Vancouver pedestrian death of 2016

A senior citizen has died after being struck by a car in Vancouver late last night.

At around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 21, an 81-year-old man was crossing East Broadway mid-block between Main and Quebec Streets when he was hit by a car travelling west in the centre lane.

The man was rushed to hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries, according to the Vancouver Police Department.

The 48-year-old male driver stayed at the scene and has been cooperative with police. While speed and alcohol were not believed to be factors, poor weather conditions likely were.

The VPD says this is the first pedestrian death of the year.
