Fire destroys businesses at Coquitlam strip mall

Dec 19 2017, 9:41 pm

The roof of a Coquitlam strip mall has partially collapsed and several restaurant businesses have been decimated following an early morning fire.

The blaze at the strip mall located at Barnet Highway and Falcon Drive began at approximately 1:30 a.m.

Firefighters attempted to contain the blaze to one restaurant, where the fire originated, and attempted to extinguish the blaze from the inside. However, they had to pull back when the building’s structural integrity was compromised and caused a partial roof collapse.

It took more than three hours for fire crews to contain and put out the blaze. According to Breakfast Television’s Greg Harper, it was a stubborn blaze and more than 30 firefighters were deployed.

Two other businesses were also damaged by the spread of the fire, but there were no injuries in the incident. Fire investigators will remain at the site today to determine the cause.
