Over $4,000 in fines issued after two different parties held in Burnaby

A pair of fines were handed out in Burnaby this past weekend for two parties that failed to follow British Columbia’s COVID-19 rules.

Not only that but the functions– although unrelated– were held at the same location.

The Burnaby RCMP say that on Saturday morning, just before 2 am, they responded to “a large party that was taking place in a rental suite.” The gathering was located at a condo building in the 6300 blocks of McKay Avenue.

Burnaby’s COVID Compliance Enforcement Team responded and say that there were 26 people in attendance, which violates the limits for vacation properties. The RCMP also says that the host hadn’t taken contact information from those in attendance and that there was insufficient space for physical distancing.

The host of the gathering was given a $2,300 fine and the party was broken up.

Less than 24 hours later, the same police officers returned to the suite after a “second complaint that a large party was taken place.”

Police say that this time, a different person had rented the property and was hosting a gathering with 17 people in attendance. Similarly, no contact information had been taken and there was no space for physical distancing, resulting in another $2,300 fine.

Corporal Mike Kalanj of the Burnaby RCMP calls the acts “appalling” and says that partiers will be caught.

“When we see the lives that have been lost and the sacrifices being made by people around our Province due to COVID-19, it is quite frankly appalling that we still have people showing complete disregard for measures put in place to try to keep everyone safe and well,” he said in a statement.

“If you have a vacation property booked in the coming weeks to host a party with 20 of your friends, take our advice and cancel it now because you will be reported and you will be fined.”
