Which countries will play in Vancouver during FIFA World Cup? We're about to find out

FIFA World Cup milestones are coming fast and furious.

We’re less than 200 days away from the beginning of the tournament, which will include seven matches in Vancouver.

In recent days we found out that downtown roads will be turned into pedestrian fan zones and that Science World will convert into a soccer exhibition.

Next up is the FIFA World Cup draw, which is set for Friday in Washington, D.C., with the television broadcast beginning at 9 a.m. PST. A day later, on Saturday at 9 a.m. PST, FIFA will release the full World Cup schedule, including the location of each match.

That’s when we’ll find out which countries and their travelling supporters will be coming to Vancouver.

Of the seven matches BC Place is set to host, five will come in the group stage: June 13, 18, 21, 24, and 26.

There’s a big list of countries that Canada can’t play in the group stage, so that limits the opponent for their BC Place matches on June 18 and 24.

But the remaining three group stage matches? Outside of the other host countries in the United States and Mexico, those are wide open.

Imagine the excitement if a high-profile team comes to Vancouver, like England or France. Could we see Lionel Messi and Argentina, or Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal?

Maybe we’ll get Brazil or Spain or Germany.

Then again, a match between Panama and Cabo Verde is possible too.

How to get FIFA World Cup tickets

The schedule release will also make the next round of ticket-buying extra intriguing.

The entry period for the third phase of ticket sales, which FIFA is calling the “random selection draw,” runs from Dec. 11 to Jan. 13. This is the first ticket lottery where fans will know which teams are playing in the games they’re purchasing tickets to.

To buy tickets, you must create an account on FIFA.com/tickets. From there, you’ll be able to log in and enter the draw.
