The FIFA World Cup is a little under eight months away, and you can bet that excitement is in full swing for it.

And while Toronto and Vancouver will be hosting 13 matches of the tournament, people will be coming from all corners of the globe to check out the action in North America.

FIFA announced Thursday that over one million tickets have already been sold for the tournament next year, with matches taking place in 16 different North American cities. The tickets were available via a Visa-affiliated presale lottery, the first of several lottery stages to dole out the tickets. While millions of fans were left disappointed in their inability to buy tickets, people from 212 countries and territories of residence have already secured their seats for the tournament.

Unsurprisingly, the biggest block of fans looking to go to FIFA World Cup matches is from the United States, which will host 78 of the tournament’s 104 games.

“As national teams across the globe compete for a place at the historic FIFA World Cup 26, I am thrilled so many football-loving fans also want to be part of this watershed event in North America,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Canadians rank second on the list of fans who have grabbed the most tickets, followed by Mexicans, as Mexico will also host 13 matches.

England fans are the most emphatic non-host country ticket-buyers, followed by Germany, Brazil, Spain, Colombia, Argentina, and France, in that order. Given that six of those seven countries (not Colombia) have won the World Cup in the past, it’s no surprise that their fans are rabid for the chance to possibly see them do it again.

The next date for ticket-interested fans to keep in mind is Monday, Oct. 27. The entry period will open for the early ticket draw, with time slots for purchase from mid-November to early December.

The final lottery for tickets will happen after the Dec. 5 draw that decides the tournament’s matchups and schedules. Any tickets available after the final draw will then be made available to the general public.

For more information on how to sign up for the lotteries, or to check out the tournament’s already live, but admittedly finicky resale platform, fans can go to FIFA’s website.

When is the World Cup?

The tournament kicks off on June 11, 2026, with the final set for July 19, 2026, at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium.

Seven FIFA World Cup games are scheduled for Vancouver and six for Toronto next year. Vancouver will host matches from June 13 through July 7, while Toronto has matches from June 12 to July 7.
