Fatal Granville St. Bridge crash leaves one man dead, one detained

Dec 19 2017, 7:29 pm

An early morning crash on the Granville Street Bridge has claimed one life, and one driver has been detained on suspicion of DUI.

The crash happened at about 4 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the bridge.

Vancouver Police Department’s Const. Brian Montague told CTV News: “It looks as though the green Honda was rear-ended by the Mercedes on the bridge.”

Photos from the scene show horribly mangled vehicles. “The Honda was so badly damaged that firefighters said the car would likely have to be moved to another location to remove the man’s body,” notes CBC News.

The driver of the Mercedes was administered a Breathalyzer test, and was ultimately detained. Montague says alcohol likely played a role in the crash.

Police add they are looking for a possible witness who may have fled the scene after the crash.

The southbound lanes of the Granville Bridge have remained closed through the morning commute in order to accommodate the crash investigation.
