Fatal car crash against tree in Surrey investigated as homicide

Metro Vancouver’s homicide investigators have deemed a fatal crash last night in Surrey as suspicious.

A man was discovered severely injured in a car smashed against a tree in the area of 79th Avenue and 123 Street just after 9 p.m. on Friday night. He was rushed to hospital, but later succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

However, Surrey RCMP are saying that the man’s injuries are inconsistent with a car crash, and as a result the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken over the investigation.

“We are in the evidence gathering stage at this time and expect to have the area closed off to public access for several hours,” said Sergeant Stephanie Ashton, Media Relations Officer for IHIT. “We are looking for anyone that may have been in the area at the time of the crash to come forward with information.”

Anyone who may have information on the incident that could assist investigators is asked to contact IHIT at 1-877-551-4488 or Crime Stoppers’ anonymous hotline at 1-800-222-8477.
